My first attempt at NaNoWriMo

So, because I’m not busy enough, I’ve decided to try my hand at writing a book.  This idea started with me trying to figure out what to do with my long commute time.  It is an hour each way between here and work.  I have gone through a ton of audio books and podcasts.  That’s great but I wanted to try something more ambitious.  Eric from the SEO group I go to mentioned NaNoWriMo one night.  The idea is to write a 50,000 word novel in a month.  My first thought was, “Wow, who has time for that?!?”  But after a while I realized, I do.  I have between one to two hours of time during the day that I can’t do much else with.  I had already been recording myself for some blog posts on my mp3 player.  Could I extend that process into writing a book?

I did some experimenting with my mp3 player and Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Standard (which I love).  I set the volume somewhat low.  I used a cable to connect my mp3 player to my microphone jack on the computer.  Then I started Naturally Speaking, pressed play on my mp3 player, and the contraption started transcribing away.  Awesome!!

The next step was to fill out my story line.  I’m making progress chipping away at it.  Here is an image of my mind map so far.  I realize you can’t see any detail.  It’s just a visual on my progress in filling out my story.  In outline form, it’s about 3 pages.

Now I have to confess that I think I am going to start writing early.  I can’t stand to lose any more time and want to strike while the iron is hot.  Also I think the editing phase is going to take me much longer.

I’ll start to give some plot info in the future.  Wish me luck.

  1. I decided to test it out. The first day yielded over 1700 words. Woo hoo!!

  2. After downloading your image and opening it in photoshop, I think I’ve got an excellent idea for a book and, not having a family, will crank it out in half the time. Thanks man, I’ll remember to send you postcards from exotic locals when my book becomes Nationwide Bestseller!
